Benefits of Corporate Chair Massage for Employees

The increase in employee stress, depression, and anxiety is startling. A recent (2016) analysis of global EAP (Employee Assistance Program) data found employees are seeking help for more severe mental health issues than ever before. Some data shown here supports this conclusion –

  • Employee depression cases increased by 58%
  • Employee anxiety cases increased by 74%
  • Employee stress cases increased by 28%

Data is based on 2-year period between 2012-2014

Other studies have found over a third of people typically feel tense and stressed during their workday. More than half of people feel their employer doesn’t provide sufficient resources to help them manage stress. This is unfortunate since this is not good for short and long term business goals. However, most importantly, it simply is not good for employees. Workplace stress can lead to a lack of energy, higher susceptibility to disease, and seen from the statistics above, depression and anxiety.

An extremely beneficial remedy to this work-place stress is to hire on-site massage therapists to come to the office and offer 10 or 15 minute mini massages. Believe it or not, just 15 minutes of massage a day can improve circulation and restore energy levels. It too can give a boost to employee morale.

When employees sit at a desk and type all day they develop neck and back pain, and forearm and hand cramps. These pains can lead to headaches, lumbar disc issues, wrist and elbow problems and more serious. Aches and pains can prevent quality sleep and proper relaxation – which can leave employees feeling tired and unmotivated at work. Productivity decreases when employees are tired – work begins to pile up and so do feelings of anxiety and worry. Stress quickly develops and employees are on their path to burnout. It’s an unhealthy and common cycle.

Employers can help prevent this by providing on-site massages to their employees. Benefits may include:

  • Increased productivity.   Studies show that happy, motivated, and appreciated employees get more work done in a shorter time span than those who feel underappreciated and unhappy. Providing on-site massages for employees will help communicate their value, give them a much-deserved break, and  motivate them to do better work.
  • Decreased sick time.   Aside from regular, scheduled vacation time, employees are often absent due to sickness and stress. More recovery and mental health days are needed when employees feel stressed and unhappy at work.
  • Increased employee retention.   Employees that are happy at work want to stay with their company and grow. Those who feel constant stress, or underappreciated, look for new jobs. Managers and employers are always needing to think of ways to maintain employee retention.
  • Increased overall happiness.   Stress comes from work, yes, but it also comes from outside sources. Things such as marital issues, world events (mass shootings, political tensions, natural disasters, etc.), and unhealthy lifestyles create stress for employees as well. Though one cannot solve stress caused from outside influences, employers can take a part in helping by including work place wellness, such as massage.

Providing meals, stocked snack bars, and holiday parties are some of the ways many employers shower their employees with appreciation and increase morale in the office.  Massage therapy is another way, and healthy way to show appreciation. When offered regularly the long term benefits felt by employees, may also be felt in business growth.
